Tributes
Betty Hughes Vining, 84, of Hebron entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ early morning Wednesday January 24 at her home, after having been surrounded for many hours by her family, long-time care giver, Doris Rector, and much love, joy, happiness, hymn singing, and Scripture reading. She demonstrated strength, courage, grace, and dignity in life and in death, and was deeply loved by her husband, Louis Vining, and her two children. Betty was born March 21, 1939, in Stearns, Kentucky to Roy and Ethel Hughes, and lived there until the 7th grade before moving to Covington and graduating from Holmes High School in 1956. She retired from Cincinnati Bell in 1992 after 30 years of service, achieving a high position in Facilities Management, one of the first women to ever reach that position in the company. She was strong, brilliant, wise, determined, warm, and loving. Even when gravely ill, her first words to you were: “Hi honey, how are you?” She always was willing to help anyone in her life, quietly assisting countless family members and friends. Betty was a long-time member of Erlanger Baptist Church and the Virginia Doan, Lydia, and Caring and Winsome Sunday School classes. She was adventurous, traveling with Lou to the far corners of the globe. She enjoyed square-dancing, gardening, cooking, the countryside, boating, occasionally fishing, and watching UK and Baylor basketball and Bengals football. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she always had time for—and thrived on—spending quality time with her family.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ethel Hughes; and brothers, Bob Hughes and Gene Hughes. She is survived by her husband: Louis Vining; daughter: Teressa (Tony) Foltz; son: Charlie (Lisa) Frazier Jr., grandchildren: Brandon Foltz, Brian Foltz, Calli (David) Marvin, Jake (Erica) Vines; great-grandchildren: Robbie Foltz; Crew, Monroe, Bear, and Lottie Marvin; and Mullins Vines.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 30 from 11:30am to 1:00pm at Erlanger Baptist Church. A Celebration of Life Service will immediately follow at 1:00pm. Betty will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Erlanger. Memorial contributions can be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
