Tributes
James “Brian” Freeland, 57, of Burlington, KY, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Edgewood, KY, surrounded by his loving family. Brian was a teacher for Freeland Home School. He was born on November 30, 1963, to James Earl and Martha Sue (née Traughber) Freeland. Brian enjoyed history, digging into God’s Word, traveling and being with his family.
Brian attended East Robertson Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade and was an ERHS graduate of 1982. Farming and baseball were a huge part of his early years. He pursued a Criminal Justice degree at Middle Tennessee State University where he graduated in 1986. He worked several years as a probation officer and an investigator for the Public Defender’s Office before beginning a career with State Farm Insurance. Brian and his family lived in Murfreesboro, TN; Puyallup, WA; and Burlington, KY during the past twenty-two years. He left the workforce five years ago to homeschool their two daughters. He loved spending time with his girls while teaching them. He was also active with their Classical Conversations Community.
Brian was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Sue Freeland, in April 2021 and mother-in-law, Mary Dixon in June 2020. He is survived by his loving wife of twenty-two years, Debbie (née Dixon) Freeland and their two daughters, Jessica & Olivia Freeland (Burlington, KY). He is also survived by his father, James Earl Freeland (Cross Plains, TN); brothers, Stephen (Tina) Freeland (Orlinda, TN) and Brent (Sabrina) Freeland (Farragut, TN); father-in-law, Gene Dixon (Murfreesboro, TN); brother-in-law, Gene (Leshelle) Dixon, Jr (Murfreesboro, TN); along with several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 17, from 3:00-5:00 pm at Grace Fellowship, 9373 Gunpowder Rd, Florence, KY 41042. The following weekend, visitation will be held in his hometown Friday, October 22, 4:00-7:00 pm and Saturday, October 23 10:00 am-12:00 pm at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 7109 SR-25, Cross Plains, TN 37049. A Celebration of Life will follow at 12:00 pm at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to be made to www.showhope.org or www.miamoo.org.
