Bruce Lynn Kells departed this life on October 10 at 10 p.m. with his loving family by his side at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. He was 65 years old.
Bruce was born March 1, 1951 in Cincinnati and grew up on a Northern Kentucky tobacco farm. He earned his Master’s Degree in Geology from the University of Kentucky where he met his wife JoAnn Mattingly, and served honorably for three years in the U.S. Army.
For more than 30 years Bruce worked as a geologist, studying the natural world that captivated him so deeply. At 55 he earned his Law Degree from Salmon P. Chase Law School and became a member of the Kentucky Bar Association, and later served as supervisor of the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands in Frankfort.
His interests included history, science, golf, UK sports, spending time with family, and having a deep hunger for knowledge in all aspects of life.
Bruce is preceded in death by parents Jeanette Blain and Floyd Kells.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years JoAnn Mattingly-Kells, his two children, Morgan Lee Feldman (Eric), Mica Blain Kells, grandchildren Elijah Joseph and Ella Rett Feldman, and brother Barry Scott Kells, along with numerous relatives.
Visitation for Bruce is Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and the funeral service is Friday at 11 a.m., both at Linnemann Funeral Home, 1940 Burlington Pike, Burlington, KY 41005.

To Bruce’s family and friends
My deepest condolences to Bruce’s family and friends. It sounds like he had a real passion for life and accomplished so much in his lifetime. During this time of great loss, it is my hope that you can find some comfort from God’s promise in the Bible found at John 6:40- “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who recognizes the Son and exercises faith in him should have everlasting life, and I will resurrect him on the last day.”
All of our dear loved ones asleep in death have that promised hope of living once again! God never intended for any of us to suffer and die and he will fulfill his purpose of bringing mankind back to a perfect state where death will be no more. 1 Corinthians 15:26 says “And the last enemy, death, is to be brought to nothing.”
It sounds like Bruce had a real love for the earth so these verses might be especially touching to you: Psalm 37:11&29 says “But the meek will possess the earth, And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. 29 The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it.”
We can look forward to that wonderful resurrection of those now sleeping in death coming back to life here on earth but under perfect peaceful conditions where no one will ever die again. Instead we will all enjoy living forever!

My sincere condolence to Bruce’s family and friends
I was a colleague of Bruce’s at Chase. His knowledge and the experience that the years had given him made Bruce a wonderful classmate. Insightful, yet humble, Bruce was rarely at a loss of words in any discussion. His presence was always welcomed. He will be missed.
