Charles “Charlie” Dale Oakes, 73, of Florence, KY, passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2022 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, KY. Charlie was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of Boone County Rotary Club, and an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. He spent the past 35 years helping with The Bean Bash, a fundraising event for Redwood Schools, BAWAC, New Perceptions, and Special Olympics District 7. In addition, Charlie was well-known in Boone County, KY for his contributions to the community, which included heading the Boone County Softball League for 26 years.
Charlie was born in Peru, IN where he resided until early high school. Moving to Muncie, IN he finished school at Muncie Central High and attended Ball State University for college. Relocated to Florence, KY in 1980 and has been a residence since. Charlie loved life and lived it to the fullest. His passions included Cincinnati Reds and horse racing, while dedicating his life to service of the community and children. His most treasured times were spent with his girls, wife Linda and daughter Nichole. Charlie left a lasting impression on each person that he came into contact with and there was never a person that crossed paths that wasn’t touched by his caring, loving, generous, and charismatic personality.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, E.L. and Henrietta Oakes.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 47 years, Linda Oakes (nee Chesterman); his daughter, Nichole (Earl) Oakes-Taylor; his sister, Sue (Bill) Culpepper; his step-mother, Mary Ann Oakes; and his Godson, Adam France.
Charlie also leaves behind his nieces, Ivy (Michael) Fennell and Leslie Sawyer, and his grand-nephew, William Fennell.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 28, 2022 from 3PM-6PM at St. Henry Catholic Church in Erlanger, KY. Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 6PM at the church. A private burial will be held at a later date.
The family requires that visitors and guests wear masks due to the on-going COVID-19 Pandemic.
