Gary Alan Dunhoft, 71, of Burlington, KY passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021 in the comfort of his home with his family by his side. He was born July 19, 1949 in Covington, KY to the late John And Myrtle Dunhoft. After high school, Gary proudly joined the Marines to serve his country in the Vietnam War. Gary was a true hero; he served 3 tours in Vietnam and was a Purple Heart recipient. Gary had a huge heart, and he loved his family dearly. He had a tough physical exterior; he was a manly man, prideful and strong, but when you got to know Gary, he had a great heart; he was a romantic, sentimental and passionate. Gary loved the outdoors. He enjoyed nature; he loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed fishing so much that he started his own Guide Service at Lake Cumberland. He and his wife had a Bed and Breakfast and Gary guided Striper Fishing expeditions all over Lake Cumberland. He also enjoyed history and classic cars, and he loved to watch the History and Discovery Channels. Gary’s family was always his top priority though, he lived for his family. His main concern was that his wife, children, and grandchildren had the love and support that they needed. He was very selfless, and often put the needs of others before his own. Gary is survived by his loving wife: Deborah “Debbie” Dunhoft (nee:Propes), his beloved children: Travis Dunhoft, Joe Shotwell, Kristina Martin, Anthony Thor, Stacey Rudolph, David Thor, and Melissa Finke, his cherished grandchildren: Colten, Shena, Laurna, Chasta, Haley, Tyler, Lauryn, Payten, Parker, Ethan, and Cole, his dear great-grandchildren: Brennen, Brooklyn, Briella, Paisley, Paxton, Wyatt, Rylee, and Reese, his siblings: Kenny Dunhoft, Johnny Dunhoft, Lonell Dunhoft and Tommy Dunhoft, and several loving nieces nephews and friends. A visitation will be held for Gary on Sunday, June 6, 2021 from 6pm until 9pm at Linnemann Funeral Home, 1940 Burlington Pike, Burlington, KY 41005. A service will be held on Monday, June 7, 2021 at 10:00am at Linnemann Funeral Home. Following the funeral service, Gary will be laid to rest at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery, 205 Eibeck Lane, Williamstown, KY 41097. Memorial contributions can be made to the VA Medical Center (Lexington) at 1101 Veterans Drive, Lexington, KY 40502.

Special Memories of a Special Couple
Jackie and I are sadden by Gary’s passing and pray for Deborah during this time of mourning. As their first guests at the Eagle’s View B&B, they always made us feel more like long time friends or family. A very special couple indeed, who thought of others first.
In Loving Memory of a Special Stepdad
The day you left and gained your wings my heart just broke in two. I wish you could have stayed with us but heaven needed you. You left me with the memories and I love you dearly still. No matter how much time goes by you know I always will. You were a very special person. I know I cannot bring you back although I have wished it everyday. A piece of my heart went with you the day you went away. There are no words to express what you meant to me. For being a dad you didn’t have to be. A beautiful person with a wonderful heart. We may have not been related by blood but you loved me so much like your own daughter. I’ll treasure all the memories because I was so lucky to have the perfect stepdad! ❤️

Pappy
I have soooo many childhood memories with my pappy and being his first grandchild gave us a lot of one on one time when I was little. Some special memories include, Disney world, my first knife, FISHING from the time I was 2 . I love the memories I have with him there are so many I will always hold in my heart.
My Pappy was married to my Nana when I was little and they had an ingrown pool . My nana taught me to swim while my Pappy taught me and gave me the courage to jump off the diving board in the deep end. When I was little, about 4 years old, I always had my finger in my nose, my Pappy put his finger in his nose and picked it until the artificial fishing colorful worm bait came out!!! To my 4-year-old surprise…I never picked my nose again! Haha
Pappy always watched M.A.S.H. at night and ate Oreos with milk. He also loved peanut butter and jelly! He was always proud of all of us girls. He loved ALL of his grandkids and great grandkids so very much an never ever did he forget a single birthday or Christmas!!! He was a Soldier for our country and for our Family. He lived many chapters of a long beautiful life. He made an impact on so many as he was there for us through thick and thin and taught us everything about life that we ever needed to know . We could always go to Pappy, all of us! He loved his wife Debbie to the soul and would protect her as he would all of us girls no matter what. True Love, a love that not everybody in this world will know. What they had was so special and they set a good example for all of us as a family!!! Debbie took the best care of Pappy and I am so thankful and blessed that God put her into his and our lives.
Her family is our family and always will be. Pappy will be missed DEEPLY we shall all stay in close touch to keep his memory and spirits BRIGHT!!!
