Tributes
Joseph C. Barkie, Sr. passed away May 2, 2022 at his home. A man of many talents, he was his family’s ‘fix it’ man. He approached life with the attitude of living life to its fullest. Joseph began his Army service at the age of 17. Five years later he married his first and only love, Yvonne K. Matlack, in 1959. He began a career as a retail sales manager before striking out on his own, opening his first furniture store, The Deacon’s Bench. Always having a love for travel, he spent his retirement years caring for and traveling with Yvonne; visiting grandchildren, enjoying the beaches of Florida, and fulfilling his goal of visiting our country’s many historical sites. Never believing in slowing down, he continued the passions he loved while overcoming the challenges of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and heart disease. Joseph spent much of his time outdoors, reflecting, writing, and recharging. In this spirit, Joe’s life came to peaceful closure outdoors doing what brought him happiness. Joseph leaves his family with a wealth of knowledge and experience along an appreciation for wit and humor. The many life lessons he shared and exemplified will continue for generations. Joseph was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Yvonne K. Barkie. He is survived by his children, Charles Barkie, Jr., Leslie Church (Anthony), and William Barkie (Deanna); and grandchildren, Ryan Dougherty (Amanda), Lauren Wilson (Zach), Harrison Church, Jenna Barkie, Samuel Church, Conner Barkie, Justin Barkie, Evan Barkie, Emma Barkie, Ethan Barkie and great grandson, Jameson A. Church. Visitation will take place at Linnemann Funeral Home in Erlanger, Ky. from 12:00 – 1:00pm with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell, Ky. Memorial Donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
